Ostrich Leather: Full Quill, Smooth and Leg — Three Leathers From One Bird
An ostrich gives a strap maker three different leathers, and they have almost nothing in common to look at. Most shops list all three as “ostrich” and leave you to work out which one you are buying. Here is how to tell them apart in a photograph.

Full quill — the crown of the hide

The pattern everyone recognises as ostrich comes from one patch: the crown, across the bird’s back, where the quills were rooted. Every follicle leaves a raised round bump, and the spacing is different on every hide — it is grown, not printed.
Only a small area of each bird carries them, which is why full quill is the part cutters fight over. The leather itself is soft and rich in natural oils, so it stays supple for years and takes colour deeply.

Smooth ostrich — the same hide, without the bumps

Away from the crown the same skin has no bumps whatsoever — a fine, faintly pebbled surface with a soft matte sheen. It behaves exactly like full quill in the hand, because it is the same leather: supple, strong for its weight, deep in colour.
It is the choice for anyone who wants how ostrich feels without the pattern announcing itself across the wrist. Under a cuff, most people will not know what it is.

Ostrich leg — scales, not follicles

The legs look like they came off a different animal. Instead of round follicles they carry hard scales, closer to a reptile than to a bird, and they are the toughest of the three: the fibre runs tighter, so leg holds a sharper burnished edge and resists scuffing better than the body.
No two legs carry the same scale run, and there are two broad kinds. On some the scales stay fine and even the whole length of the strap. On others they widen from ankle to knee, so one end of the strap is finer than the other.

Even scale: Flat Chestnut, Flat Forest Green. Graduated: Flat Royal Blue, Padded Teal, Padded Emerald Green.

Which one should you choose?
If you want people to notice the strap, full quill. If you want ostrich to be your business and nobody else’s, smooth. If the watch gets worn every day and you want the edge to still look sharp in two years, leg.
