Hamilton Khaki Field Leather Strap: 20mm and 22mm Fit Guide
A Hamilton Khaki Field leather strap has to match your reference: the 38 mm Khaki Field Mechanical and the 38 mm Khaki Field Auto take a 20 mm strap, while the 42 mm Khaki Field Auto takes 22 mm. Length depends on your wrist, not the watch, so a strap cut to order can match both numbers.
The Khaki Field is Hamilton's military-style field watch line: a plain, highly legible dial in a stainless steel case. It usually leaves the factory on a textile or cow leather strap. At XILUGS, a replacement leather strap is cut to your lug width by a single artisan at our Ha Noi bench and finished within 3–5 business days of your order.
What size strap does each Khaki Field take?
Hamilton publishes these figures on its own product pages for the Khaki Field Mechanical 38 mm (H69439931), the Khaki Field Auto 38 mm (H70455533) and the Khaki Field Auto 42 mm (H70555533).
| Model | Lug width | Buckle width |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical 38 | 20 mm | 20 mm |
| Auto 38 | 20 mm | 18 mm |
| Auto 42 | 22 mm | 20 mm |
Lug width is the gap between the lugs, and it must be exact. Buckle width is the narrow tail end: Hamilton's strap for the 38 mm Auto tapers from 20 to 18 mm, while the Mechanical's stays at 20 mm. If you own a different reference, look up its page on Hamilton's site, or follow our walkthrough on measuring lug width at home.

A 20 mm strap is one of the easiest sizes to find, but a handmade strap lets you choose the leather, the length and the buckle color together, so the watch and strap look planned rather than swapped. The same 20 mm width suits other tool watches we cover, as our Omega Speedmaster strap guide and Tudor Black Bay 58 strap picks show.
How long should a Khaki Field strap be?
Hamilton's own cow leather replacement strap for the collection, reference H6000001221, is listed at 80 mm at 12 o'clock and 115 mm at 6 o'clock. XILUGS writes the long side first, so in our notation it reads 115 mm long and 80 mm short. Our size guide matches wrist size to length like this:
- 15.6–16.5 cm wrist (6.1–6.5 in): 115/70 mm
- 16.6–17.5 cm wrist (6.5–6.9 in): 115/75 mm
- 17.6–18.5 cm wrist (6.9–7.3 in): 125/75 mm
- 18.6–19.5 cm wrist (7.3–7.7 in): 125/85 mm
If Hamilton's strap fits you with the pin in a middle hole, our 115/75 mm is the closest standard length, with a buckle end 5 mm shorter. Prefer Hamilton's exact numbers? Choose Custom size in the builder and type 115 and 80.

Case length matters too. Hamilton lists the 42 mm Auto at 53 mm lug to lug against 47 mm for both 38 mm models, so the bigger case covers more of the wrist and can take a slightly shorter strap.
Which leathers suit a field watch?
A field watch was designed to be read quickly and worn hard, so it looks most natural on leathers that look good with a few marks. These four are where we would start:
- Waxed cowhide: an oily, matte leather that shows lighter streaks where it flexes and darkens as you handle it.
- Olive cowhide: the closest color to classic military green, with a soft, slightly textured surface.
- Canvas with leather trim: a light, casual option that keeps the textile feel of the Mechanical's factory strap, with a leather keeper and backing.
- Honey or tan waxed cowhide: the warmest choice, and the easiest way to lift a black dial.

Exotic leathers such as alligator are possible, but on a utilitarian dial they tend to look dressed up. Save them for a dress watch and let the field watch stay casual. You can browse every option in our waxed cowhide strap collection and the canvas and sailcloth straps.
Flat or padded on a 9.5 mm or 11 mm case?
Hamilton lists the Khaki Field Mechanical at 9.5 mm thick and both Auto models at 11 mm. A flat strap keeps a thin watch sitting low on the wrist, while a padded strap adds height near the lugs and balances a taller case.
- Mechanical 38: flat, so the slim hand-wound case stays the focus.
- Auto 38: flat for daily wear, or lightly padded if you like a fuller look.
- Auto 42: padded, which suits the larger, thicker case and the 22 mm width.
Every leather in our builder can be made flat or padded. Our guide to padded vs flat watch straps explains how to match profile to case thickness in more detail.

Thickness also changes comfort. A flat strap breaks in faster and folds tightly behind the buckle, while a padded strap holds its shape longer and stays rounded on the wrist.
Which strap color works with each dial?
The Khaki Field comes in several dial colors, and the strap can either echo the case or warm the whole watch up. As a simple guide:
- Black dial: brown, honey or olive. All three keep the dial easy to read.
- White or cream dial: dark brown leather, or gray canvas for a lighter summer look.
- Green or khaki dial: brown or tan rather than an exact green match, which can look flat.
- Blue dial: tan waxed cowhide or a neutral gray.
Thread color is a quieter choice. Cream or white stitching picks up the printed numerals on most field dials, while tonal stitching makes the strap disappear and leaves the watch to do the talking.

Buckle color should follow the case. A brushed steel case looks right with our silver Classic buckle, and a black-coated case with the black one, both at no extra cost.
How do you fit the new strap?
Khaki Field straps attach with spring bars between the lugs. Every XILUGS strap comes with your choice of regular or quick-release spring bars. Quick-release bars have a small lever, so you can change the strap by hand without touching the case with a tool.
If you swap often between leather and textile, quick-release is the easier pick. Our comparison of quick-release and traditional spring bars covers the trade-offs, including when a regular bar holds more securely.

FAQ
Is the Hamilton Khaki Field 20 mm or 22 mm?
Both, depending on the case. Hamilton lists 20 mm for the 38 mm Khaki Field Mechanical and the 38 mm Khaki Field Auto, and 22 mm for the 42 mm Khaki Field Auto.
Can I put a leather strap on a Khaki Field Mechanical sold on textile?
Yes. Hamilton lists reference H69439931 on a NATO-style textile strap, but the lugs take any 20 mm two-piece strap with spring bars, including leather.
Is a leather strap a good idea for water use?
Leather and water do not mix well, even on a watch rated to 100 m. Our guide on whether a leather strap can get wet explains what rain, sweat and swims do to it.
How long does a custom strap take to reach the US?
Your strap is cut and stitched after you order, which takes 3–5 business days, then US shipping takes about 10–12 days. Delivery to the US costs $5.99 and becomes free once an order passes $350.
Can I add initials to the strap?
Yes. Engraving on the lining is free, up to 12 characters. Engraved straps are personalized, so they cannot be returned unless faulty.
Not sure of your wrist size? Measure it once and check the XILUGS size guide before you order.
