Togo vs Epsom vs Babele: grey, sky blue and tan calfskin hides compared

Togo vs Epsom vs Babele: Which Calfskin Watch Strap Suits You?

Togo, Epsom and Babele are three calfskins that differ in finish, not in hide. In the Togo vs Epsom vs Babele choice, Togo is soft and pebbled, Epsom is embossed, firm and the most water-resistant, and Babele keeps its natural grain under a light wax that deepens with wear. XILUGS straps start at $69, or $75 for Epsom.

Togo vs Epsom vs Babele: what is actually different?

All three come from calf hide. What separates them is the surface treatment, and that is what you see and feel on the wrist every day: how much grain, how much firmness and how the strap will age.

  • Togo: pronounced pebbled grain, soft in the hand from day one and slow to crease; the raised grain hides small marks.
  • Epsom: embossed with a tight, even grain and a firm finish that resists scratches and water and keeps its shape.
  • Babele: an Italian calfskin whose natural grain stays visible under a light, waxy top coat.

The close-up photos below show each surface on the hide or the finished strap, so you can compare the grain directly.

Is Togo leather a good choice for a watch strap?

Togo is the grain most people picture when they think of fine calfskin, and it makes a forgiving everyday strap. There is no break-in: a flat 3.5 mm Togo band wraps a 16–17 cm wrist from the first wear.

Togo up close: the raised pebble is irregular, which is exactly why small scuffs disappear into it.

The pebbled surface is practical, too. Marks from a desk edge or a jacket cuff sit inside the grain rather than on top of it, so the strap stays presentable without special care.

Where Togo is weaker is water and shape. As a soft calf it absorbs sweat and rain more readily than Epsom, and a padded Togo strap relaxes a little over a year. For many wearers that softening is the point. Browse the Togo calfskin collection, from $69, flat or padded.

Is Epsom leather better than Togo for daily wear?

For a watch that gets worn hard, usually yes. Epsom's firm, embossed finish is the most scratch-resistant and water-resistant of the three, so it suits summer wrists, commutes and crisp modern cases.

Epsom in five colors: the embossed grain is small and regular, the same on every strip.

It is also the leather we use for perforated rally straps, because the firm surface holds every hole cleanly. The trade-off is feel: Epsom is stiffer on day one than Togo or Babele and keeps its shape rather than softening into the wrist.

Epsom also does not darken the way a waxed or vegetable-tanned leather does, so the color you buy is the color you keep. See the Epsom calfskin collection, from $75.

What is Babele calfskin, and who is it for?

Babele is the name most buyers have not heard of. It is an Italian calfskin finished so the natural grain shows under a light, waxy top coat, and because that grain is not embossed, no two hides are quite the same.

Tan Babele: fine natural lines under the wax, with cream stitching close to the edge.

Babele sits between a dress calf and a casual leather: smooth enough for a formal watch, warm enough for a field or pilot watch. The wax deepens with handling and takes on a soft gloss along the edges, so a Babele strap looks better at month six than at week one. Our article on natural vs hand-dyed patina explains that kind of aging in more detail.

The Babele calfskin collection starts at $69.

Which calfskin should you pick for your watch?

Start from how you wear the watch, then pick the leather and build:

You want Pick Build
Soft on day 1 Togo Flat 2.5–3.5 mm
Hard daily wear Epsom Padded 4.5 mm
Visible aging Babele Flat 3.5 mm
Rally look Epsom Padded
Slim wrist Togo Flat 2.5 mm

Water is the other deciding factor. Epsom copes best with sweat and light rain, while Togo and Babele prefer a dry wrist; our guide to leather straps in rain, sweat and swims covers what each situation does to calfskin.

Flat or padded: which build suits each leather?

Every XILUGS strap can be flat (2.5 to 4.5 mm at the lug) or padded (3.5 to 5.5 mm), with a straight or curved end. Each leather has a build it does best:

  • Togo is happiest flat at 2.5 or 3.5 mm, where its softness helps and there is no padding to relax.
  • Epsom is the natural padded leather: it holds a 4.5 mm padded profile, which is why our rally straps are cut from it.
  • Babele works both ways: flat at 3.5 mm it reads as a dress strap, padded at 4.5 mm it suits a thicker automatic.

Whatever the leather, match thickness to the case: a slim dress watch wants 2.5–3.5 mm, a chunky diver or chronograph 3.5–4.5 mm or more.

Underneath, every build is the same: a reinforcement layer, a soft water-resistant Zermatt lining, a hand-painted edge, and your choice of stitch, edge and keeper colors. Lug widths run from 12 to 24 mm and lengths from 105/65 mm to 135/105 mm.

FAQ

Togo vs Epsom leather: which is better for a watch strap?

It depends on how you wear the watch. Togo is softer and comfortable from day one, and its pebbled grain hides desk scuffs, so it suits dress and everyday watches. Epsom is firmer, handles scratches and water better and holds a padded or rally shape, so it suits sports watches and summer wear.

Is Epsom or Togo more water-resistant?

Epsom. Its embossed, firm finish copes with light rain and sweat better than Togo, a soft calf that absorbs moisture more readily. Neither leather is waterproof, so wipe the strap dry and let it air-dry away from heat.

Which of the three fits a small wrist best?

Togo, flat, at 2.5 or 3.5 mm. It is the softest of the three and wraps a small wrist without a stiff break-in. A 14.6–15.5 cm wrist takes the 105/70 mm length and a 15.6–16.5 cm wrist the 115/70 mm.

Why does Epsom cost more than Togo and Babele?

Epsom starts at $75, against $69 for the other two; the difference is the leather, and the construction is identical. Options such as a curved end (+$15), a Pre-V buckle (+$5) or a butterfly clasp (+$10) are added on top of the base price.

Can I choose a different lining?

Yes. The lining is Zermatt by default, with Epsom, Togo or Swift lining available for $5 more. The lining changes the feel against the skin, not the look from the front.

How long does delivery to the US take?

Making takes 3–5 business days in Ha Noi. Shipping to the US costs $5.99 flat and takes about 10–12 days, orders over $350 ship free, and any duties are the customer's responsibility.
