Watch Strap Buckle Types: Pin, Pre-V, Butterfly or Deployant

Watch strap buckle types come down to four closures: the classic pin buckle, the heavier Pre-V pin buckle, the butterfly clasp and the deployant clasp. Pin buckles are simple and let you pick any hole each day. Folding clasps keep the strap as a closed loop, so the watch cannot drop while you take it off.

A buckle is the metal piece at the short end of a two-piece strap. It decides how the strap opens, how much the leather flexes each day and how the watch sits under your wrist. Each strap we cut and stitch in Ha Noi leaves with the closure you pick in the builder: 12 finishes across four types, priced from no extra cost to +$25.

What are the main watch strap buckle types?

Each closure belongs to one of two families. Pin buckles (also called tang buckles) push a pin through a hole in the long half of the strap. Folding clasps use hinged metal blades that open and close under the wrist, while the leather stays at one fixed length.

Type How it closes Builder price
Classic pin Pin through a hole Included
Pre-V pin Pin through a hole +$5
Butterfly Two folding blades +$10
Deployant One folding blade +$25

Prices are the add-on cost in our Design Your Own strap builder, where a strap starts from $69. There is also a fifth choice, "None", for owners who want to reuse the buckle they already have.

Classic pin buckle: the default for most straps

The Classic buckle is a slim, polished steel frame with a single pin. It is the closure most leather straps ship with, and it suits almost every watch, from a small dress piece to a 42 mm field watch. You can set it one hole tighter on a hot day and one hole looser in winter.

The Classic buckle: a thin polished frame that keeps the strap end light and low on the wrist.

On XILUGS straps, the Classic buckle comes in silver, gold, rose gold or black at no extra charge. Match it to the case metal: silver for steel, gold or rose gold for a gold-tone case, black for a coated case.

The trade-off is wear. Every time you buckle up, the strap bends around the frame and the pin presses on the same hole. On a well-loved strap, that hole is usually the first place to stretch.

Pre-V buckle: a heavier pin buckle for wide straps

The Pre-V buckle works like the Classic, with a pin through a hole, but the frame is wider and flatter, with a brushed finish and a squared outline. It has more visual weight, so it balances thick padded straps and big sports cases better than a slim polished frame.

In the builder, Pre-V adds $5 and comes in silver, gold or black. It suits rally and padded straps, where a slim buckle can look lost at the tail.

  • Pick Pre-V for straps of 22 mm and wider, padded leather, or a rugged look.
  • Stay with Classic for dress watches, slim cases and straps of 18 mm and under.

Butterfly clasp: two folds, two push buttons

A butterfly clasp is a double-folding clasp. Two blades fold toward each other under the wrist and lock in the middle. Press the two buttons at the sides and the blades open, so the strap widens enough to slide over your hand.

Because the strap is set to one length, the leather is not bent through a buckle every day. That keeps the holes and the tail looking new for longer, which matters most on alligator, ostrich and other exotic skins.

The trade-off is adjustment. A butterfly strap is cut to your wrist, and you change the fit by moving the clasp along the holes rather than tightening it in a second. Give us an exact wrist measurement when you order.

Deployant and tank-style folding clasps

A deployant clasp uses a single hinged blade. Our straps with a push-button deployant clasp open with two buttons, stay closed as a loop, and the clasp wears flat under the wrist. In the builder, the Deployant option adds $25 in silver or gold.

The tank-style clasp is a quieter folding design. Two equal halves of leather meet under the wrist and the strap looks seamless from the top. Our tank-style clasp straps are sized to your lug width and to the width of the clasp itself.

Inside the frame, the strap tail passes through and a steel blade folds flat beneath the wrist. It is the classic dress-watch fold, a good match for slim rectangular and round dress cases.

Folding clasps add a little metal under the wrist. If you type all day with your wrist on a desk, try a pin buckle first or choose a thinner flat strap so the stack stays low.

How to choose a buckle for your watch and wrist

Start with how you wear the watch, then look at the strap. These quick rules cover the most common cases.

  • Daily wear, frequent swaps: Classic pin with quick-release spring bars, so you can change straps by hand.
  • Exotic leather: butterfly or deployant, to spare the holes and the tail from daily bending.
  • Wide padded strap: Pre-V, which carries the visual weight of a 22 to 24 mm strap.
  • Dress watch: Classic or tank-style, which keep the profile slim under a shirt cuff.

Width matters as much as style. A buckle has to match the strap's tail width, not the lug width, so a 20 mm strap that tapers to 18 mm needs an 18 mm buckle. Our guide on how to measure lug width and strap length shows where to take both numbers.

Metal color is the last step. Match it to the case, or to the crown and hands if the case is two-tone. Silver is the safe pick for steel watches, and black buckles look best on coated or titanium-gray cases. For a worked example on one watch, our Seiko Presage strap guide weighs a pin buckle against a folding clasp.

Building a strap with the right closure

The buckle is one step in the builder, next to leather, stitch, edge and keepers. Every option appears on a live preview, and the price updates as you choose. Our step-by-step guide to designing your own strap walks through each choice in order.

Each strap is cut and stitched by one artisan after you order, and takes 3 to 5 business days to make. US delivery costs $5.99 and is free on orders over $350.

FAQ

What is the most comfortable watch strap buckle?

For most people, a slim Classic pin buckle on a flat strap feels lightest, because there is very little metal under the wrist. A folding clasp is easier to put on and take off, but adds a little height.

Is a deployant clasp better than a tang buckle?

Neither is better for every case. A deployant keeps the strap at one length, so the holes and tail wear less. A tang buckle is lighter and lets you change the fit through the day.

What is the difference between a butterfly and a deployant clasp?

A butterfly clasp has two blades that fold toward each other and meet in the middle. A deployant has one hinged blade that folds flat. On our straps, both open with push buttons.

Can I add a folding clasp to a strap I already ordered?

Yes. Add the butterfly clasp to your cart as an add-on for an existing XILUGS order, put your order number in the checkout note, and we pack it with your strap at no extra shipping cost.

Can I keep the original buckle from my watch?

Yes. Choose "None" in the buckle step of the builder, and the strap ships without a buckle so you can fit the one you already own. Check that its width matches the strap's tail.

Not sure which width your buckle needs? Check the XILUGS size guide before you order.
