How to Measure Your Watch Strap Size: Lug Width and Length

A strap that fits is the difference between a watch you wear and one you leave in a drawer. Two numbers decide the fit: lug width and length. Both take about two minutes to measure at home.
1. Lug width — the number that must be exact
The lug width is the gap between the two lugs, where the strap slots into the watch case. It is measured in millimetres and it has to be exact — a strap 1 mm too wide will not fit, and 1 mm too narrow leaves a visible gap.
Lay the watch face-down and measure the inside distance between the lugs with a ruler or caliper. Almost every watch is an even number: 18, 19, 20, 21, 22 or 24 mm. If you land on an odd measurement like 21 mm, that is normal — some watches use it.
The second number, the buckle width, is usually 2 mm narrower than the lug width (a 20 mm strap tapers to an 18 mm buckle). We cut both to whatever you need.
2. Length — sized to your wrist
A watch strap comes in two pieces: the long side (with the buckle) and the short side (with the holes). Length is written as long/short in millimetres — for example 115/75 mm.
The simplest way to size it: measure a strap you already own and like, from the lug to the buckle on the long side and to the middle hole on the short side. If you are measuring your wrist directly, wrap a soft tape around it and add roughly 60–70 mm for the case and buckle overhang.

3. Strap thickness and taper
Thickness changes how a strap wears. A thin flat strap suits a dress watch; a thicker padded strap suits a diver or a larger case. You choose the form and thickness when you order.
