Padded vs Flat Watch Strap: How to Match Case Thickness
A padded vs flat watch strap choice comes down to case thickness. As a rule, a case under 10 mm looks right on a flat strap of 2.5–3.5 mm at the lug, a 10–13 mm everyday watch suits 3.5–4.5 mm, and a sports or dive case over 13 mm can carry a padded strap of 4.5–5.5 mm.

The sections below explain what each profile does and when it earns its place on your wrist.
Padded vs flat watch strap: what is the difference?
A flat strap keeps an even thickness from edge to edge. It is two layers, the outer leather and a lining, bonded and stitched together, so it sits low on the wrist and slides under a shirt cuff. At XILUGS a flat strap is cut at 2.5, 3.5 or 4.5 mm where it meets the watch.
A padded strap is built up in the middle, so it stands taller than its edges. We make three padded shapes.
- Padded Domed: rises to a rounded center and falls away to thin edges, the classic look.
- Padded Square: a raised center with a flat top and crisp shoulders.
- Padded Full: padded edge to edge, the thickest profile, which fills the lugs on a big case.
All three run from 3.5 to 5.5 mm, and on a padded strap that number is the height at the center.

Either way, the strap tapers toward the buckle, so the part that sits on top of your wrist is thinner than the number you order.
How thick should a watch strap be for your case?
The quickest guide is the thickness of the watch itself, measured from the crystal to the caseback. You can find it in the maker's specifications or measure it with a caliper. Then match the strap to it, so neither part looks oversized next to the other.
| Case thickness | Profile | At the lug |
|---|---|---|
| Under 10 mm | Flat | 2.5–3.5 mm |
| 10–13 mm | Flat or Domed | 3.5–4.5 mm |
| Over 13 mm | Square or Full | 4.5–5.5 mm |
| Tight lug gap | Flat | 2.5–3.5 mm |

A simple rule sits behind the table: the thicker the watch case, the thicker the strap can be. Width matters as well, so check your lug width with our guide to measuring lug width and strap length before you choose a profile.
Flat or padded: which suits your watch?
When flat is the better choice
Flat is the right call whenever the watch is meant to disappear under a sleeve. Dress watches, small vintage pieces and anything under about 10 mm thick look best when the strap sits at or below the line of the case. A tall padded strap on a thin watch makes the watch head look as if it is floating.
- Dress and formal watches: a 2.5 mm flat strap keeps the whole profile low.
- Smaller wrists: a flat strap wraps closely, with less bulk on the underside of the wrist.
- Warm days: less leather means less to trap heat against the skin.
- Tight lug gaps: a flat strap clears the case where thick padding may not.
Our slim burgundy goatskin strap is a good example. Goatskin has a tight fiber, so it stays strong even when it is cut thin. Flat straps come in 2.5, 3.5 and 4.5 mm, so you can still make a flat strap a little fuller for a mid-size watch.
When padded makes more sense
Padding earns its place on bigger, taller watches. A diver or chronograph over 13 mm thick has visual weight, and a flat strap can look like a ribbon tied to it.
A padded strap gives the case something to sit on and fills the space between the lugs. Because the center is raised, the strap meets a tall case closer to its own height, so the line from watch to strap stays smooth instead of stepping down.

Each padded shape suits a different kind of watch. Padded Domed is the everyday option, comfortable on a 10–13 mm case. Padded Square, with its flat top and squared shoulders, reads as bold and structured, so it suits tool and sports watches. Padded Full is the thickest profile and is meant for large cases that need the lugs filled.
Several of our nappa cowhide straps are listed padded, in tan, chocolate and red.
Will a thick padded strap fit between my lugs?
Usually, but not always. Some watches leave only a narrow gap between the spring bar and the case, often models designed for a metal bracelet. A 5.5 mm padded strap may not clear that gap, or it may press against the case and stop the strap from folding down naturally.
- Look at the watch side-on and check the space between the spring bar and the case.
- If your current strap already feels tight there, choose flat or a thinner padded option.
- Still unsure? Add a photo of your watch in the Note or Watch Photo field when you order.
- We confirm the fit before we cut, because every strap is made to order.
That check happens on your actual watch, before any leather is cut. When the gap is tight, a thin flat strap is usually the easiest fit.
Padded vs flat watch strap: does it change comfort or fit?
Both profiles are comfortable when the thickness suits the case. Each is lined with Zermatt, a soft, water-resistant lining, so the side against your skin feels the same.
The difference is on top. A padded strap feels more substantial and holds its shape, while a flat strap bends to the wrist sooner. If your watch spends the day near a keyboard or under a cuff, the lower flat profile catches less. If you want a strap with more presence, padded is the one to choose.

New leather of any profile feels firm at first and softens with wear. Length is chosen separately from thickness, so pick it from your wrist measurement rather than guessing. The chart on each product page lists every length by wrist size. If you sit between two sizes, the larger one is usually the safer choice.
How is a padded strap built in our Ha Noi workshop?
Every XILUGS strap passes through the same 18 steps at our bench in Ha Noi, with one artisan per strap. Thickness is decided early. In step 2, the leather is skived, or pared thinner by hand, where the strap folds at the lug and the buckle, so there is no hard ridge against your wrist.

In step 3, a reinforcement layer goes in where the strap takes the most pull, at the lug end and under the buckle. Some makers add a stiffener between the layers to hold a padded shape. We leave it out unless you choose a padded form, so a flat strap breaks in to your wrist instead of resisting it.
You can follow the remaining stages on our 18-step crafting process page.

FAQ
Is a padded or flat watch strap more comfortable?
Neither is more comfortable in itself. Comfort comes from matching the thickness to the case and the length to your wrist. Both have the same soft Zermatt lining against the skin.
Where is strap thickness measured?
At the thickest point, where the strap meets the watch lugs. On padded straps, it is the height at the center; the edges are thinner, and the strap tapers toward the buckle.
Can I order a thickness that is not listed?
Yes. Choose Custom and enter the thickness you want at the lug end in millimeters. We cut every strap to order.
What thickness suits a 12 mm everyday watch?
Between 3.5 and 4.5 mm. Choose flat for a cleaner look, or Padded Domed if you want the strap to feel more substantial.
Does a padded strap take longer to make?
No. Every XILUGS strap, flat or padded, is made to order in 3–5 business days, then shipped from Ha Noi.
What if a padded strap does not fit my watch?
Send us your watch model or a photo before ordering and we will confirm the fit. If it still does not suit, an unused strap with no engraving or custom spec is returnable for 30 days after delivery.
