Watch Strap Keepers: What the Two Loops Do and How to Color Them
Watch strap keepers, also called loops, are the two small leather bands on the buckle half of a strap. Once you buckle up, the tail slides through them so it lies flat instead of flapping loose. Every XILUGS strap has two keepers, cut and stitched by hand, and in our builder you can color them to match or contrast.
What do the two keepers do?
Each loop has its own job. The Down loop sits next to the buckle and catches the tail as it leaves the frame, so the strap does not gape at the fastening point. The Up loop sits further along and holds the end of the tail, so it cannot lift away when you move your hand.

Together the two loops decide how tidy a strap looks on the wrist. With only one, the tail tends to curl. With two loops sized to the strap, it stays flat along the buckle half. A loop that is too loose rattles, and one that is too tight will not slide at all. Our guide to watch strap buckle types covers the fastening itself.
Fixed vs floating keepers
Keepers come in two kinds, and our crafting process page lists both as step 13 of the eighteen.
- Fixed keeper. Held in place on the strap, so it always catches the tail at the same point near the buckle.
- Floating keeper. A closed loop that slides along the buckle half, so you can push it to wherever the tail ends on your wrist.
The floating loop matters because the same strap length ends at a different point on a slim wrist and a larger one. It is also the loop people notice when you turn your wrist, so a contrast color shows most there.
Your four keeper options in the builder
The live builder offers four ways to color the loops, each with its own effect. Only one of them carries a surcharge in the current price rules.
| Option | What you get | Extra cost |
|---|---|---|
| Match leather | Strap's own leather | None |
| Match underlay | Color under holes | None |
| One color | Both in one color | None |
| Two colors | Each loop its own | $5 |
With two colors you pick the Up loop and the Down loop separately; leave one blank and it simply matches the strap leather. The keeper palette has 24 leather colors, from cream and tan to turquoise, burgundy and royal blue.

Match underlay only makes sense on straps with racing holes or another visible underlay. On a plain strap, choose Match leather or pick one color yourself.
How XILUGS makes the keepers
Each strap stays with one artisan from the first cut to the final check in our Ha Noi workshop. The keepers come late in that sequence, after the strap itself has been stitched and its edge creased and painted.
- The keeper leather is cut to suit the width and thickness of that strap.
- Each strip is skived thin so the loop does not bulk up on the wrist.
- The loop is stitched closed and sized to this strap, not taken from a bin of standard loops.
Every strap is then checked against the order before boxing, and the whole job takes three to five days. Our handmade strap walkthrough shows all eighteen steps in order.
Which keeper color suits which watch?
The keepers sit by the buckle, so a colored loop is a quiet detail. It shows when you turn your wrist or take the watch off, not from across the room. That makes it a low-risk place to add some personality.

Three approaches work reliably:
- Pick up the dial or bezel. One accent loop on a plain strap, such as a navy loop on brown leather under a blue dial.
- Two tones from the watch. Two loops in the two colors of a GMT bezel read as a plan, because the pairing already exists on the watch.
- Repeat the thread. A loop in the stitching color ties the strap together; see our watch strap stitching guide for thread styles.
For formal wear, keep both loops in the leather's own color. On alligator or ostrich, a matched keeper lets the scales or quills stay the focus. The painted side of the strap follows the same logic, as our edge color guide explains.

Canvas and sailcloth straps can use keepers too. On our canvas and sailcloth straps, leather loops in a trim color often pick up the hole panel or lining.
What your keepers say about strap length
Keepers are a quick way to check whether a strap fits. Buckle the strap on the hole you use most, then look at where the tail ends. Ideally it passes through both loops and stops a little beyond the Up loop, with no long flap hanging past it.
- Tail ends before the Up loop. The long piece is too short for your wrist, so the tail can lift away when you move.
- Tail runs far past the Up loop. The long piece is too long, and the spare end catches on cuffs and sleeves.
- Tail sits just past both loops. The length is right, and the floating loop can be slid to hold the end.
Our live size guide suggests going one size shorter for watches over 44 mm and one size longer if you like a loose fit. When you fall between two sizes, it recommends the larger one. Our guide to measuring strap size walks through the wrist and lug measurements step by step.
Building a strap with custom keepers
In the bespoke strap builder you set keepers along with leather, thread, edge and underlay, lug widths between 12 and 24 mm and length from 105/65 to 135/105 mm. The live preview builder redraws the loops as you click. Custom straps start from $69.
Straps that show keeper ideas well:
- Padded Navy Cowhide Strap, Red Keeper: from $69, one bold accent on a plain strap.
- Padded Red Epsom Rally Strap, Turquoise: from $75, loops that match the holes and thread.
- Flat Navy Epsom Strap, Green Stitch: from $75, keepers tied to the stitching.

FAQ
Do all XILUGS straps have two keepers?
Yes. Every strap is made with two loops, one fixed and one floating, cut, skived and stitched by hand and sized to that strap.
Are contrast keepers real leather?
Yes. Keeper colors in the builder are leather colors, so a red or turquoise loop is a real strip of leather in that color, not paint.
Will a floating keeper slip off the strap?
No. The floating loop is a closed band sized to the buckle half, so it slides along the strap but cannot leave it. If it ever feels loose or tight, email support@xilugs.com with a photo.
Do colored keepers cost extra?
Matching the leather or underlay, or choosing one color for both loops, adds nothing. Choosing two different colors adds $5 in the current price rules, because each loop is cut from a separate leather.
Can I return a strap with custom keeper colors?
A strap built to your chosen colors is a custom item, so it cannot be returned for a change of mind, only if it is faulty. Use the live preview and send us a photo of your watch if you want a second opinion.
Before you order, confirm your lug width and strap length in our size guide so the loops sit where the tail ends on your wrist.
